collection MANAGEMENT + CONDITION SURVEYS
Collection surveys provide an efficient and cost-effective way to gain a comprehensive, bird’s-eye view of the condition and preservation needs of multiple artworks and collections.
Whether you care for a few meaningful works or a large art collection, a survey helps clarify priorities and appropriate levels of care. Surveys include visual condition assessments of structural stability, surface condition, environmental factors, and display and storage conditions, forming the foundation for responsible collection management and preventative conservation planning. They support long-term stewardship, the development of a prioritized treatment list, and realistic budgeting for ongoing collection care. Surveys are especially valuable following events such as flooding, fire, or mold outbreak. Resulting documentation supports informed decision-making, responsible conservation and preservation, and insurance and loan documentation. Additional collection management support can include the development of a digital framework for long-term collection care and documentation.art advisory + stewardship
A conservator’s perspective can support informed decisions at multiple stages of an artwork’s life.
Consultation is available for private collectors, institutions, and living artists seeking objective evaluations of condition, materials, existing documentation, and potential risks for future care. This work may include advising on materials and techniques, discussing varnish selection and application, and considering the long-term implications of specific artistic processes. For acquisitions, consultation may involve on-site assessments at galleries, auction houses, studios, or private viewings, as well as collaboration with appraisers and advisors. The aim is to provide a clear understanding of an artwork’s material condition and long-term stewardship needs before committing to acquisition, and to serve as a resource for contemporary artists through open dialogue about material behavior, surface change, and the implications of artistic processes.preventative conservation
The most powerful conservation work often happens before damage occurs.
Preventative conservation focuses on creating the conditions that allow artworks to remain stable, legible, and accessible over time. I co-lead the advisory panel for the conservation of the Orozco murals at The New School because I believe strongly that preventative conservation is paramount to long-term stability, ongoing study, and public enjoyment. This work is inherently holistic and interdisciplinary, seeking to prevent or limit risk through thoughtful, minimally interventive strategies rather than reactive treatment. Services may include environmental assessment and recommendations (HVAC, lighting, and pest management), guidance on display and installation, appropriate backing and housing, and documentation practices. Preventative conservation supports sustainable stewardship by addressing the systems around an artwork—so that future intervention can be minimized.Conservation advocacy
Strong stories help make conservation possible.
When a conservation project requires broader support—whether through fundraising, institutional buy-in, or public engagement—thoughtful advocacy and clear storytelling become essential. Conservation advocacy and storytelling focus on articulating the history, significance, and care needs of artworks and collections in compelling, accessible ways. Experience contributing to grant proposals and project narratives helps translate technical conservation goals into values-driven language that resonates beyond the field. Strong storytelling can play a powerful role in building support for conservation projects and expanding access to professional care, ensuring that cultural heritage remains visible, valued, and preserved.
practical CONservation of paintings
Professional art conservation ensures that damage is stabilized, deterioration is slowed, and the integrity of the artwork is preserved.
Paintings are living objects, shaped by time, materials, and the environments they inhabit. Over the years, they may develop tears, flaking paint, surface grime, water or tidal stains, subtle distortions, or areas of earlier restoration that no longer serve the work. As these conditions evolve, they often become more complex—and sometimes more challenging to address—making thoughtful, timely conservation an essential part of responsible stewardship. I provide hands-on conservation treatment tailored to each painting’s materials, history, and condition. Services include structural stabilization such as tear repair, consolidation of flaking paint, cleaning, and the thoughtful reintegration of areas affected by previous restoration campaigns. With extensive experience in both structural treatment and complex surface challenges, I approach each work with careful testing, research, and planning to ensure responsible conservation and long-term preservation. I am always happy to discuss concerns in advance of a consultation and, when possible, offer general guidance or ballpark advice; however, formal treatment proposals and estimates are provided only after an in-person examination of the artwork.on-site project management
Complex conservation projects benefit from clear coordination and experienced oversight.
On-site project management is available for conservation initiatives that involve oversized works, multiple stakeholders, or layered logistical considerations. With extensive experience conducting on-site treatments for large-scale works such as murals and coordinating comprehensive collection surveys, projects are guided from planning through execution with clarity and care. Services may include coordinating schedules and site access, overseeing treatment workflows, supporting documentation strategies, and facilitating communication between conservators, facilities teams, architects, engineers, and institutional partners. Thoughtful project management helps ensure that conservation goals remain central while projects move forward efficiently, safely, and with purpose.cultural heritage education
Understanding how we care for art deepens how we experience it.
I offer lectures, workshops, and collaborative programming that explore conservation, materials and techniques, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Educational offerings are tailored for a wide range of audiences, from students and emerging professionals to collectors and community groups. My approach emphasizes accessibility, curiosity, and transparency—demystifying conservation while fostering deeper connections between people, artworks, and the care they require. Cultural heritage education supports more informed stewardship and helps build a shared sense of responsibility for preserving the objects that carry our collective memory.
new clients
Each artwork carries a story, and I welcome the opportunity to learn more about yours.
I welcome your inquiry and look forward to learning more about your artwork or project. All communications and services are handled with discretion and respect for client privacy. Services are provided by appointment only, and I invite you to share a few details using the form below to begin the conversation. Clients may start with a brief consultation for collection surveys, collection care guidance, or a conservation assessment. When a more in-depth evaluation is appropriate, a thorough examination is undertaken to assess condition and establish preventative or active conservation recommendations. A detailed condition report, treatment proposal, and estimate for conservation work (if appropriate) are then prepared. Consultation and treatment fees are tailored to each project and based on the size, complexity, material needs, and location of the artwork. When treatment is elected, a detailed estimate is confirmed and scheduling proceeds in collaboration with the client. All conservation work includes careful research, testing, planning, and full documentation—including imaging—in accordance with AIC professional standards. Collection surveys and examinations are conducted on site whenever possible, minimizing risk by eliminating the need to transport objects for evaluation.
